Raymond H. Massie, 82, died Tuesday, November 15, 2016, following a year-long battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Jo Ann (West) Massie; his daughter, Shannon (Massie) Lindsay and husband Michael; his son, Shane Massie and fiancé, Racquel Wood; grandchildren Kaitlyn Massie, Peyton Massie, Bret Wood and Abby Wood; brother, Jack Massie (Pat); sister, Jean Sparks; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Roy C. Massie, mother, Mamie Maybrier Massie, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Asher.
Mr. Massie was born in Lexington, KY, in 1934. After graduating from Henry Clay High School in 1953, he entered the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant after his tour of duty during the Korean Conflict. Immediately following graduation, Mr. Massie began his 34 year career as an educator in Kentucky and Mississippi.
Mr. Massie was a much beloved teacher and coach who touched many lives. Mr. Massie or "Coach" as he was more commonly known, loved cheering for his UK Wildcats and playing golf (even making a hole-in-one) but enjoyed coaching his basketball teams and teaching history most of all. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1995 and was selected for the Pearl River Central High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
Coach Massie loved the Lord and loved his family more than words can express. His wonderful sense of humor and love of life will always be remembered. Coach Massie was greatly loved in return and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
