It is with great pleasure that I, Penny Walker, announce my candidacy as Mayor of the Town of Stonewall in the upcoming election.
After serving our community in several different aspects for over 30 years, I am confident in my ability to perform the duties required of the position.
Serving as Stonewall’s clerk and court clerk for 10 years, I became well-acquainted with the needs of our community. As I maintained records, prepared agendas, coordinated elections, and prepared the city budget, I took mental note of how each decision affected the community and people that I love. Those 10 years were followed by another 10 years serving the Town of Enterprise in the same capacity. For the last 11 years, I have served our community at the Clarke County Tax Collector’s office where I have interacted with the people daily.
As a lifetime resident of Clarke County, I take pride in doing my part to meet the needs of the people who make up this place I call home.
If elected mayor, my top priority will be restoring and maintaining our town to the safe and flourishing community that I remember as a child. In efforts to do that, I vow to listen to the needs and concerns of the people.
I would like to bring in new businesses and would love to restore our parks and recreation area where we have somewhere to take our children to play and picnic. I would like to explore the possibility of bringing a daycare in so our working parents can have somewhere close to home to leave their children when they go to work. I would like to work with Jones College, and hopefully we can get the students from there involved in our community, even if they don’t live here.
I hope to assist in creating additional dining options, implement a ditch clean-out, assist in painting fire hydrants, replacing old signs with new ones, and schedule some community activities throughout the town. Hopefully, all of this will keep the taxes, water bills, and garbage bills at a minimum for all citizens in Stonewall.
I acknowledge the fact that safety is a concern of our citizens, and I plan to implement routine patrolling of our streets to help combat this concern.
I will put my focus on finding and obtaining grants available to help ensure that our community not only has the financial resources needed to run effectively but also to help clean and protect its historical value.
I aim to ensure that our local fire department has the services, resources and recognition that they are due as they continue to be a vital part in keeping our community safe.
