This past week, the Quitman Police Department was kept busy with different calls involving shootings in the city limits.
One incident involved 18 year old Chauncey Riley and originated from a domestic dispute.
“The incident that occurred at the sports complex here off of North Jackson was an isolated incident involving a boyfriend and a girlfriend or ex-girlfriend,” explained Quitman Police Chief Chris Read. “The female subject, along with the sister, were at the sports complex, and the male subject came from Stonewall to the complex after contacting her. He got out with what witnesses said was an AR platform style rifle and started arguing with her, assaulted her, and got back in his truck. As he was leaving, the older sister of the victim got in her vehicle and started chasing him, going up North Jackson back towards Stonewall. Witness statements and evidence show where the subject or subjects in that truck leaned out of the vehicle while they were going down North Jackson and fired approximately four to five rounds, one hitting the tailgate of the truck and one hitting the hood of the car. Once we got that information and got the subject’s name and location, we then contacted our neighboring agency in Stonewall and gave him the name and information. They were familiar with it. They had outstanding warrants out on this subject. They went to his residence and arrested him without incident. Through our further investigation, we attained all the information that we needed the next morning. With victim statements and information, we had charged this subject with shooting inside an occupied vehicle and also drive by shooting. If he hasn’t been already, he’s also about to be charged with domestic violence, simple assault. There are still pending charges that we are planning on moving forward with as soon as we finish our investigation. He also had outstanding warrants in Stonewall that were served on him as well. I think since then that he’s been given a $50,000 bond, I believe.”
They are still actively investigating everything involved in the case, and there could be more pending charges later on based on the results of the investigation.
Later on in the week, a separate incident occurred.
“In a different incident, there was a report of shots fired at Quail Run Apartments this past weekend,” continued Read. “Once we arrived, witnesses stated the subject’s name and that he was highly intoxicated. When we arrived on scene, that individual came out of his apartment, and he was taken into custody without incident. Witnesses stated that he was intoxicated and shot his weapon in the air, and he was charged with disorderly conduct and also shooting inside the city.”
