Name: Monica Fuller
Age: 57
What political office are you seeking?
Alderman Ward 3, City of Quitman
What is your party affiliation?
Independent Candidate
Why are you running for office?
I became interested in our city government a few years ago after attending the meetings and seeing our elected officials at work. Over time, I have engaged in conversations with neighbors and friends within the city and listened to their concerns and complaints. I believe I can use that input to make improvements through this position.
What type of work experience do you have?
I have worked in county government positions, office manager of a small business, and supervisor positions in the private sector.
What do you hope to accomplish if elected?
I hope to help grow our town while keeping our small-town feeling. I would like to see our town become a stopping place where people would leave the four-lane to visit our city and shop with our businesses. We lost a huge draw to our city when Archusa emptied. We must find ways to assist in the rebuilding of Archusa—not through taxation of our residents but through other avenues. We need to improve our recreation complex to accommodate activities that encourage outdoor activities while providing a safe environment.
From the perspective of the office you are seeking, what is the most important issue facing your municipality?
The most important issue is growth! We should be encouraging small businesses and shopping local as much as possible. I believe we should be listening to the people. I don’t think we should hinder those who are working to bring new ideas and growth to our city. Through growth of our businesses, we will see an economic increase without raising taxes. We should engage and work together. There has to be communication and unity to make things better.
What makes you a good candidate for this position?
I have worked in different jobs within government entities and private sector that have given me an understanding and knowledge of taxation and government policies and procedures. I believe this knowledge and experience will make me the best candidate to represent the people of Ward 3. If elected, I will work with the mayor and my fellow Aldermen to help our town grow and flourish.
