The City of Quitman has been busy over the last couple of months spending money provided to them through MS Code 27-67-35 (2024).
The code has the State deposit money into a fund that is distributed to municipalities each year to assist in paying the cost for certain things. Municipalities must use all of the money they are given before the end of the fiscal year in order to receive the full amount allocated the following year.
In order to use all of the allocated funds, the Quitman Board of Aldermen looked at the different possibilities they could use the money for in order to determine what would best benefit the city and its taxpayers.
They decided to use the money for multiple things, including each of the following:
• Paid off the loan for the City Hall project, effectively saving the city approximately $2,500 a month
• Purchase two trucks from Chickasawhay Natural Gas for the road department to use
• Purchase three SCAG lawnmowers and some weed eaters
• Purchase a camera system to livestream board meetings.
• Replace the sidewalk between Wright’s Funeral Home and M&M Florist
