Name: Pete Holland
Age: 67
What political office are you seeking?
Mayor of Quitman
What is your party affiliation?
Independent
Why are you running for office?
I want to see Quitman grow while maintaining our small-town atmosphere and values. I moved here going on 19 years ago for a job. The job played out, but I really like Quitman. I would like to see a City Hall that tackles issues instead of amending or rewriting current ordinances.
What type of work experience do you have?
I was a carpenter/contractor for most of my work life. I ran my own construction business. I was responsible for bidding, purchasing, and I did as much of the labor as I could and everything else. I attended college, but I did not attain a degree. I did get a very diverse education, though. I also ran a construction company for another company. My main job was to make sure they spent no more than was necessary.
What do you hope to accomplish if elected?
I would like to go through every department to try to cut unnecessary spending and otherwise reduce our costs where possible. I believe one of the main duties of the mayor is to be a custodian of the people’s taxes.
From the perspective of the office you are seeking, what is the most important issue facing your municipality?
We need jobs! We need all kinds of jobs. I would like to make it easier than it currently is to attract entrepreneurs. We need retail. I can’t buy any quality clothing in Quitman.
What makes you a good candidate for this position?
I have been in management positions at many different levels. I have hired people, and I have fired them as well. I have signed both sides of a check. I have had to make difficult decisions. I want to work for the people!
