The Quitman Woman’s Club proudly celebrated its 100th year as a federated member in February 2026. Organized and federated in February 1926, the club began its legacy of service under the leadership of its first president, Mrs. W.C. (Effie) Couch.
For a century, the Quitman Woman’s Club has been a dedicated member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs, whose mission is personal enrichment leading to volunteer service that benefits the community, state, nation, and world.
Over the past 100 years, the accomplishments of the Quitman Woman’s Club can be seen throughout our community—some highly visible and others quietly impactful. At Mary Carter Park, visitors will recognize the carousel horse named “Volunteer,” proudly standing atop engraved Past Presidents’ bricks. The GFWC shields displayed on the park’s archway symbolize state and national recognition earned through dedicated service.
At Harris Park, the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs shields displayed on the signage reflect another lasting contribution by the Quitman Woman’s Club.
For many years, the organization supported the local Distinguished Young Woman program, providing scholarship opportunities and encouragement to young women in the community. Continuing its commitment to academic excellence, the club annually awards cash scholarships to four graduating seniors from the Quitman School District.
The club’s long-standing Christmas Taste Tea remains a cherished tradition, offering fellowship and celebration for the women of the community. Most recently, the Quitman Woman’s Club established “Big Hearts, Little Feet” Children’s Resource Center, which provides diapers, wipes, and emergency supplies to assist Youth Court services in Quitman. In support of our youth art program, for over 45 years the Quitman Woman’s Club has sponsored the Youth Art Contest for children and youth within our district. Many artwork pieces have advanced and won overall, first place for the GFWC-MFWC competition.
In March, the Quitman Woman’s Club will welcome women from across the Central District to Quitman as members gather to celebrate volunteer service and the many accomplishments of federated women.
In addition to club projects, members are actively involved in numerous local, state, and national organizations, continuing a century-long commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Quitman and beyond.
One hundred years later, the Quitman Woman’s Club remains steadfast in its mission—proving that when women unite in service, communities flourish.
