I have honestly never had so many conversations about roads and driveways. People are constantly asking me to go and check out this road or that driveway.
Most recently, someone in Lorenzo Carter’s district sent me photos of their neighbor’s driveway receiving what appears to be milling.
The person’s message stated, “Neighbors got a new driveway at the tax payers’ expense. This is always going on.”
After sitting in the board meetings and constantly hearing them talk about cutting expenses, I would think this is an expense that could be cut.
People constantly ask about Harris Ave. If you are unfamiliar with that road, it is the road that goes by the pellet plant to Quitman Junior High School.
My opinion is that as long as the pellet plant is there, then that road will always need attention. Attention that it is not getting. Quitman needs that industry in place, which in turn puts the responsibility of road maintenance on the city.
Several parents have reached out to me about the condition of the road and expressed concerns about the safety of their child riding the bus on that road, especially when it rains.
Main Street is a big concern, too. The parking lines have faded, which causes people who don’t drive down Main Street daily to park incorrectly.
At least twice a week, if not more, you can catch someone driving the wrong way.
If you have grown up here your whole life, then you know that it’s a one-way street. What about those visiting? Better signage on Main Street is a necessity.
When I reached out to the mayor to speak with him, he responded with, “Meeting with you would be a waste of my time.”
Unless changes are made, we will continue to have discussions in the community about roads and driveways.
