Sandra Volking Burnett (known as Sandy to family and friends, Mom to her children, Nanny to her grandchildren, and Great Nanny to her three great grandchildren) was born on May 15, 1956, in Phoenix, AZ, to William and Annette Volking Jr. Later in life, she gained another maternal figure, Rose Mary Volking. Sandy was the eldest of nine siblings. Her residences included Quitman, MS, and Prattville, AL.
Sandy was married to her husband, David Burnett, of Waynesboro, MS. She had three children, Chrissy (Mitchell) Kelly of Quitman, MS, Ryan (Alyssa) Jackson of Marietta, Georgia, and Tyler Jackson, of Huntington Beach, California, as well as two bonus twin sons- Carlo and Angelo (Elaina) Kibanoff; three stepchildren, Brandy (Drew) Turner, Randi (Justin) Stewart, and Matt (Kimberly) Burnett; grandchildren, Hunter (Ellisa) Kelly, Logan Kelly, Caroline Jackson, Finn and Miles Turner, Vivian and Evelyn Stewart, Lawson and Rosie Burnett; and great grandchildren, Zander, Zayden, and Zoie Kelly. She is survived by her sisters Lisa (Duane) Glenn of Pass Christian, MS, Mary (Kippy) Smith; brother Daniel Cano, of Quitman, MS; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sandy's auburn hair reflected the vibrant spirit within her and often humorously joked she would never go gray. She had a flair for fun and loved to dress up for the Kentucky Derby or Mardi Gras Ball, never without her bedazzled fascinator and sequin gown. A registered nurse until her retirement, Sandy cared for countless patients throughout her career—and countless more as neighbors and friends. If medicine couldn’t mend it, her cooking surely could. Her legendary bacon potato chowder earned her two blue ribbons and captured hearts every time it was served. Sandy had a remarkable talent for hosting, ensuring that every detail was tailored to the occasion and making each social gathering unforgettable. Sandy’s love reached beyond her family and career into her spiritual life. A devoted member of St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church, she was known for her warm smile, inviting nature and tireless involvement. She truly never met a stranger and gave the gift of friendship freely.
On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Sandy left her earthly home in Prattville, Alabama. We celebrate her life and a woman who will be remembered.
A memorial service was held Friday, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church (5941 Main St., Millbrook, Alabama).
