Flames blazed high at the Shadow Wood Apartments in Quitman on Sunday, effectively destroying the homes of two families. It was a blessing that the families had no physical injuries from the fire.
Unfortunately, they are having to start over in acquiring what they need. One of the families affected is a young mother, Chelsea Scott, with two young children, ages ten and eight.
The fire destroyed the apartment beside Chelsea’s, but her apartment suffered from heavy smoke damage. Thanks to the smoke damage, they will be needing new beds, furniture, linens, clothes, and anything else ruined by the smoke.
The property manager for the complex, Pete Holland, has already contacted the Red Cross to see if they would be able to offer any assistance and is trying to get a new apartment prepared for them to move into as soon as possible. Knowing the need her family has after the fire, he has reached out for others to assist in helping meet some of their needs to help them get back on their feet again after such a tragedy.
Citizens in the community have come together to offer some support to the victim and her family, trying to provide them with some necessities such as clothes and shoes, as well as accepting monetary donations to assist them.
For anyone who would prefer to donate clothing or shoes, the following are the sizes they would need:
• Chelsea: medium shirt, size 7 pants, size 7 shoe
• Ten-year-old daughter: size 10 and size 4 shoe
• Eight-year-old son: size 8 and size 4 shoe
A “Chelsea Relief Fund” has been established at both Great Southern and Citizens National Bank for anyone who would like to donate money to assist. There is also a GoFundMe set up to contribute to. To donate through GoFundMe, simply go to https://gofund.me/399ad4fc.
