Ole Miss (2-0) defeated Charlotte, 41-9, as Trinidad Chambliss was 23-of-26 passing for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Down in Baton Rouge, LSU was winning 45-14 over Louisiana Tech as the Tigers scored 35 second half points. This Saturday most of the national media will converge on Oxford to witness the return of Lane Kiffin. The former Rebels coach will bring his Tigers (2-0) to take on Ole Miss in the conference opener for both teams. Since last November this game has sparked national conversations. Ole Miss has won 13th consecutive home games and even defeated LSU last year 24-19 in Oxford. ABC will televise the contest at 6:30 p.m.
For the third time ever, ESPN's "College GameDay" will be coming to Oxford to broadcast their show live Saturday. Host Rece Davis and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban will set up on The Grove Stage and begin the show at 8 a.m. CT.
“He is the truth and light,” said former Alabama football coach Nick Saban in commenting about Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor. Saban spoke about Taylor on the Pat McAfee show last week. “He is the real deal. Just watching the guy play a little bit last season and this year and then talking to Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby, this guy is a good passer, a good athlete that can run and create plays on his own. I think this guy is going to be a big-time surprise for a lot of people in the SEC,” said Saban.
Well, this past Saturday a national TV audience saw the surprise that Saban was talking about as Taylor used his arm and legs to stun homestanding Minnesota, 38-13. Taylor passed for 227 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 86 yards and another six points. Fluff Bothwell rushed for 113 yards and scored twice. Taylor teamed up with receiver Anthony Evans III for 121 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs (2-0) will open SEC play as they travel to South Carolina (2-0) Saturday for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff.
Auburn scored ten seconds into the game and cruised to a 43-8 win over USM. The Golden Eagles’ first pass play was intercepted and returned for a TD by the Tigers. Southern Miss (1-1) will host UConn (1-1) this Saturday at 6 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Alcorn won a double overtime thriller, 53-51, over Arkansas Pine-Bluff to open SWAC play. The game was played in Memphis as part of the Southern Heritage Classic. Alcorn rolled up 699 yards of total offense as quarterback Jaylon Tolbert passed for 485 yards and five touchdowns. Alcorn (2-1) plays at North Alabama (1-2) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Jackson State (2-0) was idle and will play host to Tuskegee (1-1) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Belhaven edged East Texas Baptist in a wild 45-44 contest. The Blazers (1-1) will host Iowa Central (1-1) Saturday at 11 a.m.
Delta State lost to Central Missouri, 59-10. DSU (0-3) will visit Mississippi Valley, Saturday.
Gulf Coast and East Mississippi are the only unbeaten teams remaining in Mississippi JUCO football. Gulf Coast downed unbeaten Itawamba, 50-24, while East Mississippi blasted Pearl River, 44-3, in games last Thursday. Jones clipped Northeast, 31-28; Hinds defeated Holmes, 21-7; Co-Lin surprised Northwest, 17-16; Southwest outscored Mississippi Delta, 41-24; and East Central edged Coahoma, 24-19.
