Mississippi State downed Ole Miss for the second time this season. The Bulldogs (18-7, 6-6) broke open a close contest to begin the second half and coasted to an 81-71 win over the Rebels in Oxford. Mississippi State had lost at home to Florida earlier in the week while Ole Miss had won a road contest at South Carolina. State hosts Texas A&M and visits Oklahoma this week. Ole Miss (19-7 8-5) travels to Vanderbilt Saturday.
Southern Miss dropped games to Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe last week. This week, the Eagles (10-17, 5-9) host Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs edged Vandy in two overtimes but lost at Florida last week. MSU (18-9, 5-8) travels to Texas A&M this Sunday.
Ole Miss beat Arkansas but lost at Tennessee last week. Sunday, The Lady Rebels (17-8, 8-5) host Missouri.
The USM Lady Golden Eagles lost at Arkansas State and Troy last week. This week, USM (9-17, 4-10) travels to South Alabama and Troy.
The Jackson State Lady Tigers are in first place at 11-2 SWAC entering this week’s play. The Alcorn Braves and JSU Tigers are both in second place in SWAC play at 8-4.
The Millsaps Lady Majors wrapped up the SAA regular season title at 10-1. Millsaps (21-3) hosts the conference semifinals and championship game beginning February 28.
The Belhaven Majors (21-3, 11-0) host Maryville this Friday night to complete regular season play. The CCS basketball tournament will begin next Tuesday.
The William Carey Lady Crusaders (23-0, 14-0) won over Talladega last week. The Crusaders (19-7, 10-5) won last week over Southeastern College of Laurel. This week, both William Carey teams host Mobile on Thursday before traveling to Loyola of New Orleans on Saturday.
A couple of junior college giants will meet this Thursday in Poplarville as the Jones Bobcats (22-3, 8-1) visit the Pearl River Wildcats (21-3, 10-0).
College Baseball
It was a pretty good weekend for our college baseball teams in the state. Southern Miss swept four games from Lafayette College. The Golden Eagles host Mississippi on Tuesday of this week before hosting the Lane Burroughs coached Louisiana Tech Bulldogs over the weekend. USM also visits Ole Miss next Tuesday afternoon.
Mississippi State took all three games from Manhattan as they outscored the visitors from New York 35-5. This week, the Bulldogs visit Hattiesburg before hosting Missouri State over the weekend.
Ole Miss surprised the Rebel faithful as they downed No. 21 Arizona and No. 15 Clemson in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown played in Arlington. The Rebels fell to No. 19 Texas in the three-day tournament played at the home of the Texas Rangers.
Belhaven swept St. Mary’s of New York while Millsaps swept a three-game series from Edgewood College to improve to 4-0. Delta State (7-3) started Gulf South play with a three-game sweep of Lee University. Mississippi College (6-4) won two of three from West Alabama to begin Gulf South play.
William Carey (7-3) opened conference play by taking two of three from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The first Division 1 men’s basketball committee unveiled its top 16 on Saturday. Auburn was the top seed followed by Alabama, Duke and Florida. The number two seeds were Tennessee, Texas A&M, Purdue and Houston. The third seeds were Iowa State, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Arizona. The number four seeds were Texas Tech, Michigan, Kansas and St. John’s.
The women’s 16 seeds are led by the top four: UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Notre Dame. The two seeds are USC, LSU, UConn and NC State. The three seeds are TCU, Duke, North Carolina and Kansas State. Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee are the four seeds.
