To follow-up from last week, I would like to share some fascinating information that I have learned from a book on Miracle Food Cures from the Bible by Reese Dubin. Some of these are right here in our yards, woods, and grocery stores in Clarke County.
For quite a while, olive oil has been recommended as a healthier option for food preparation. This is an oil often referred to in the Bible - more than 200 times and Dubin indicates it is the symbol of goodness, purity, and long life. It has benefits beyond just a dribble on a salad. It has benefits as both an external lubricant for joints and an internal lubricant for issues such as blood sugar, gall-bladder problems, and helping to lower cholesterol.
Another Biblical food that has been promoted with good health benefits is garlic. While we can buy garlic capsules, many of us also have an abundance of garlic growing outside our homes. Garlic has benefits as companion plants in gardens, but also has much health benefits both externally and internally. Numbers 11:15 records the Israelites use of it when they were in Egypt. Archeological records revealed Biblical time uses of garlic for fever reduction, help with loose bowels, topically for swelling, strained muscles or pulled ligaments, removal of intestinal parasites, and help to improve the heart and digestion.
A final common food from the Bible is honey. King Solomon used honey and the promised land was flowing with milk and honey. According to Dubin, honey has been used to kill germs, heal burns and bedsores, manage asthma, diabetes, and hay fever, stimulate the heart, relieve migraines, and in one case cure a horse of cataracts. Clarke County has several beekeepers who can provide us with the good kind of honey that is straight from the hive.
While we do tend to use man’s inventions as a first approach to health, what God provided is still here in great abundance. He made us – in the garden of Eden and still now. Isn’t it probable that the Creator knows best what works for the created?
