The Stonewall Police Department has teamed up with Dollar General this year to do a Toys for Tots toy drive.
“This is for children who maybe won’t get enough for Christmas,” explained Police Chief Kent Stephens. “It’s for needy children in our town. With the economy and everything that’s going on in the world right now, Christmas may be shy for some kids. We’re going to see if maybe we can make a difference.”
While they plan to attend to children in the Town of Stonewall first, they will gladly share joy outside the town limits as well if they are able to collect enough toys.
“We’re going to start with the town,” continued Stephens. “If we have an abundance, then we’re going to go beyond the town limits. We’re going to give until it’s gone. Whatever we get in is going to go right back out.”
Shannon Burns, the manager at the Dollar General, has made boxes that are placed around the town to collect toys that are donated. The boxes are located at the Stonewall Dollar General, Stonewall Town Hall, and Piggly Wiggly. Donations will be collected through December 22. They plan to deliver the toys to families on Saturday, December 23.
They also plan to do a big toy drive on Saturday, December 16, at the Dollar General.
“On December 16, we’re going to have a toy drive from 2:00 – 4:30 in the afternoon in the Dollar General parking lot,” informed Stephens. “We’re going to have the police cars down there and going to have the boxes there. We’re asking the general public if they will drop by and drop a toy off.”
If anyone knows of any families with children who may need a little help with Christmas this year, contact Stonewall Town Hall at 601-659-7033 and provide the following information: name of the family, address, how many children (how many boys and how many girls), and ages of the children. They will make up the boxes for each family and drop them off at the location provided.
They are excited to be able to give back to the community and spread a little Christmas cheer.
“We appreciate the community,” proclaimed Stephens. “This is the first time the Stonewall Police Department has been involved in this, and we’re just really asking people to reach down and give if they can. We hope this will be a yearly thing for us. We want to have that relationship with the community.”
Come out on December 16 and give to the toy drive, or leave a donation in the box at one of their three locations. Help spread love and joy to children this Christmas!
