The number of signatures needed is getting closer and closer for voters to decide if they want to vote Clarke County wet or remain dry.
The current number of signatures on the beer petition is 1,711 with 789 more signatures needed.
The current number of signatures on the liquor is 1,355 with 145 more signatures needed.
Two volunteers have worked tirelessly for the past several months gathering enough signatures on the petitions to present them to the board of supervisors.
According to Mississippi law, once enough certified signatures of registered voters have been verified, the board of supervisors must call an election to allow the voters the chance to decide if they want to vote to go wet or remain as a dry county.
All registered voters in Clarke County can sign the petition if they choose, even if they live inside a municipality. They can sign both petitions but they only need to sign the petitions once. Any duplicate signatures will be disqualified.
If the county votes to go wet, it would be legal to sell alcohol in the county however each municipality would have the option to “opt out” and not allow the sale inside the municipalities. That decision would be up to each board in each of the five municipalities in the county.
Petitions can be signed at the following businesses: Mimmo’s Italian Restaurant, Los Totopos Mexican Restaurant and Nelson’s Tire Center – Quitman; Stonewall Town Hall, Coffee Pot Café, and Faye and Buddy’s Store in Enterprise.
