A bill died on the floor in the Mississippi Legislature Monday that would have provided additional compensation for the board of directors for Chickasawhay Natural Gas with an additional $200 per month for continuing education. Currently board members receive $200 per month and this house bill would have increased it to $400 per month.
The bill was introduced February 1 by Representative Shane Barnett (Waynesboro). The bill passed out of committee but was held by Representative William Shirley (Clarke County) on a motion to reconsider; it later died on February 13th.
Shirley stated he held the bill to reconsider and opposed because the bill language was not the same as a request via a letter from the Chairman of the Board of Directors to the Mississippi Legislature.
According to the letter from Chickasawhay Natural Gas Chairman Kenny Odom, the gas board unanimously approved a motion requesting the legislature to amend a HB to include an additional $200 per month for per diem for each director per meeting.
Shirley said the bill language was for continuing education however the board letter’s request was for per diem. “I opposed this bill because the rate payers would have been paying for this (increase),” Shirley said.
Chickasawhay Natural Gas board of directors is comprised of Quitman Eddie Fulton, Waynesboro Mayor Richard Johnson, Shubuta Mayor Richard Carter, Jerry Hutto, Kenny Odom, Matthew Skidmore and Charles Combest
