The Illuminations Center for Dyslexia was the recipient of a grant awarded through the Community Foundation of East Mississippi and the donors of the Alfred and Lucille Rosenbaum and Betty Lacy Endowment.
The Dyslexia Therapy Center opened in Quitman in August 2015 and offers individualized instruction, after hours and summer programs to students from the Quitman and Enterprise School District, home schooled students and surrounding counties.
Illuminations Center for Dyslexia, a nonprofit organization, helps students who are impacted from Dyslexia.
“One out of five children suffers from dyslexia,” said Illuminations Executive Director Leta Palmiter. “And one out of ten children is severely impacted and would not be successful without adequate instruction.”
The Center, which has two locations, 109 East Donald Street Quitman and 17th Street Meridian, offers small group therapy and tutoring from licensed instructors who have master’s degree and Dyslexic therapy.
Palmiter knew there was a need for this type of tutoring because the needs were not being met in local school districts for students who suffer from dyslexia.
“We understand it is neurological and there are specific things that need to be done to remediate the learning process,” Palmiter said.
The Center offers the tutoring three days a week for one hour each day with no more than two students at a time.
The grant that was awarded will be used to fund scholarships for students who can qualify for student aid.
Funding for Illuminations Center for Dyslexia comes from grant money and private fees paid by parents.
The Community Foundation of East Mississippi is a public charity dedicating to improving and enriching the quality of life by supporting worthy causes and philanthropic services. The service area includes Clarke, Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba and Newton counties.
