The Board of Supervisors voted Friday, April 1 to hire Stephen D. Myrick as the new county administrator/comptroller. Myrick will replace long time administrator Diane Wright, who retired in March, after serving over 20 years with the county. Myrick, a certified public accountant, will continue to keep his private CPA firm open in Quitman. He was officially welcomed by the board Monday during the first regular meeting of April.
In other business, the board received a damage assessment report from Emergency Management with over $250,000 in damages to county roads and bridges from the March flooding. FEMA reimburses with disaster assistance during a state of emergency.
FEMA representatives will soon be going door to door to assist residents who may have been affected from the flooding. The board approved extending the county state of emergency for additional 30 days.
In other business, the board:
• approved the hiring of Justin Rawson and Shane Harper to serve as road deputies on an as needed basis.
• approved the purchase of a $1500 software program to assist E-911 with a skill and comprehensive testing program for pre – hires for employment as 911 dispatchers.
• approved the advertisement of a public hearing to discuss the abandonment of County Road 1511 and remove from county road register. The public hearing is set for May 2nd at 10 a.m. in the board room.
• accepted into the minutes the purchase of a K9 drug dog “Dasty” who was recently certified along with handler/deputy Blake Bonner. The dog was purchased at a cost of $8500 with donated funds by Seller’s Inc.
• The board met with a resident to discuss an intersection near Rolling Creek Baptist Church. Buddy Dew went before the board about the stop sign that is bolted down in the road between the intersections of CR 344 and 345. Dew expressed that the area was dangerous for motorists. The board agreed to look into the matter about rectifying the problem.
• approved a drainage and construction easement for County Road 134
• approved training seminars for Constables Ryan Evans and Beverly Trotter
Met with a representative with Boston Mutual regarding a life insurance supplemental policy for county employees. The board took no action and tabled the issue so that they can do more research on the matter
The board went into executive session to discuss personnel issues
Board meetings are open to the public and held the first and third Monday at 9 a.m. in the courthouse annex.
