The Board of Supervisors finally received an opinion from the Attorney General’s office and permission has been granted to the Clarke County Riding Club to utilize 40 acres on Highway 145 South and Highway 18W to be used for horse, livestock and other riding events and an additional 30 acres for overflow parking.
The supervisors received a draft of a contract and will defer to the board attorney to help work out the legal aspects and to come to an agreement on who will be responsible for what aspects of preparing the property for events.
The Board of Supervisors made a motion and accepted bids for the purchase of four generators to be installed at Pachuta, Shubuta, Stonewall and Enterprise fire departments. The bid accepted was from Taylor Power of Clinton for $99,025.00 total for the purchase of three 25KW and one 50K Watt generators. The purchase will be paid thru a grant awarded through the Mississippi and Federal Emergency Management Agencies (FEMA and MEMA) with the county paying 25% and grant money 75%.
Supervisors also passed motions for the purchase of several items: a used 2003 Sterling tanker truck for Rolling Creek fire department at a cost of $54,950; Outdoor warning siren at a cost of $24,333.00 and a used TriState 2013 Mack truck at a cost of $75,160.00
Long time Airport board member John Brown tendered an amicable resignation to the supervisors and recommended Scott Howard of Quitman to fill his spot on the board. Howard, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, was accepted and appointed.
In other business during September, the board;
• tabled a request from BTH requesting a $45 million tax exemption
• approved the hiring of James Parker and Dawnell Pickens for the County Road Department
• approved removing Dabbs Avenue from the road plan and adding Dogwood Avenue for paving
• accepted the nine county Hazardous Mitigation Plan
• received an update from Fire Coordinator Eddie Ivy that work is being done on a truck for Beaverdam Fire Department
• approved the August Claims Docket
During an August meeting, the board;
• approved the hiring of Jeremy Terrell as a driver for the Landfill department
• approved the allocation of funds for the purchase of a refrigerator for Snell VFD.
Board meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month in the board room located in the Court house annex. Meetings begin at 9 a.m. and are open to the public.
