The Board of Supervisors approved a referendum request by VFW members and the family of Marine Cpl. Dustin Lee for the placement of memorial signs on Highway 513 in memory of Lee who was killed in action in Iraq in March 2007. More details of this memorial project will be printed as it becomes available from the family. A ceremony is being planned in March to commemorate the placement of signs and the ten year anniversary of Lee’s death.
Landowner Charles Shepherd requested the board’s consideration to pay for the damage on his property. Shepherd stated a tree located on county property on Highway 18W fell and damaged the fence on Shepherd’s property. According to Shepherd, this is the second tree that has fallen and damaged Shepherd’s fence. The request was for the $150 repair bill. No action was taken and the request was tabled for further discussion.
The board approved the rehiring of public defenders Marcus Evans and Katherine McNair on a one year approval.
The board approved the hiring of Michael McCord for the Clarke County Landfill and Tammy Pitts as a full time dispatcher with E911.
The board met with representatives of Sun South (John Deere) to discuss when two tractors will be delivered that was purchased by the county. The tractors were originally supposed to be delivered in November but were delayed by the manufacturer. They are scheduled to be delivered to this county this week.
The board tabled two requests for conferences. One was a request by 4H Agent Christy King for a conference for 4H volunteers Rene Barry and Beverly Brown. That cost is $90 per person.
The second request tabled was for Deputy Blake Bonner to attend a NRA Instructor Development School at a cost of $645.
