A tax sale date of mobile homes in the county has not yet been determined, according to Tax Collector Hope Herrington. The tax collector’s office has been notifying residents for over a year that any delinquent mobile home taxes that have not been paid by October 2016 would result in a county tax sale of the property. Currently, there is over $500,000 in unpaid taxes of mobile homes that is owed to the county by property owners. The county has never enforced the policy by having a tax sale of delinquent mobile home taxes, but because of the large amount owed to the county, they have to enforce the rule in the upcoming months.
Herrington informed the board of supervisors Monday morning that warrants is still being delivered by sheriff deputies in an effort to notify the owners.
“Any time is a bad time to pay taxes and none of us want to pay, however there has been fair warning that this event would take place. Several years ago we had the bright green stickers made that stated "NOTICE Delinquent Mobile Home Taxes. THIS MOBILE HOME HAS BEEN TAGGED TO SELL FOR DELINQUENT MOBILE HOME TAXES",” Herrington said. “We also posted some of them in the hallway and doors to the tax collector's office. Each year when the blue statements are printed for mobile home taxes there is the word "DELINQUENT" printed and the years that are delinquent. In May of 2016, the second mobile home tax statements were mailed, a sticker “MOBILE HOME SALE OCTOBER 2016” hi-lighted in yellow, was attached to each statement that was delinquent by more than one year.”
“It is a very difficult process because mobile homes are just that, mobile. They are often moved from place to place without ever notifying us,” said Herrington. “It is the responsibility of the mobile home owner to see that taxes are properly assessed and paid. If a mobile home has been moved or destroyed, you are asked to please bring proof to our office and we will work out the details with you.”
Supervisors were in agreement that the tax sale should be held for the delinquent taxes but because the county has never enforced the policy of a tax sale of mobile homes, they want to ensure that adequate time is given to the owners to pay the taxes.
Once the warrants are received by the sheriff’s department, they have 60 days to deliver the warrants to the property owners. After all the warrants have been delivered, a tax sale date will then be determined and set.
Even though the deadline was October 31st, you can still pay your taxes up until the day an actual sale date is determined.
