The Quitman Woman’s Club has been hard at work making much needed renovations to Harris Park on Bailey Avenue in Quitman beside Small Hands Academy.
The Harris Park property was donated to the City of Quitman on September 20, 1961, by the Harris Family with the understanding the property would be used for a neighborhood park for the children so those living in the Kirkland-Harris Subdivision, as it was known then, would have a place to play.
With members of the Quitman Woman's Club living in the area at the time, the organization agreed to help sponsor and provide upkeep on the Harris Park property. In 1968 the "slide" and swings were added for the children. The active presidents for 1968-1972 were Mrs. Gradie Pearl Dansby and Mrs. Faye Smith, and records show the club has remained in sponsorship of the community park since that time. Over the years the lack of funds have prohibited the much needed renovations; however, QWC is currently working to make the necessary improvements.
“When Mrs. Mabel Baskett signed the deed on behalf of the Harris Family on September 20, 1961, we want to ensure her trust in the Quitman Woman's Club to work with the City of Quitman is honored,” stated Becky Watkins, QWC President. “Who would have thought 60 years later Harris Park would be getting the much needed renovations envisioned by the Harris Family when they donated the property.”
Some equipment has been installed, but more parts are needed to complete the park. The Woman’s Club is asking for help from the community to finish the park.
A sign will be placed on site with all those memorialized or honored displayed for recognition. All donations are tax exempt, and your donations can be mailed to the Quitman Woman's Club, Post Office Box 752, Quitman, Mississippi 39355.
