This year, Clarke County’s Land Tax Sale will be held online.
The pre-bidding will be on August 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Live bidding will be held on August 31 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will take place each subsequent day until all of the parcels are sold.
In order to participate in the auction online, there are steps that must be taken ahead of time. Anyone who is interested must first register online at govease.com/auctions. Once registered there, it is very important to follow up with Hope Herrington, the tax collector.
“Once you register on the site, it will show that you’ve registered, but you have to follow up with that by sending me a blank, signed check made out to Tax Collector,” explained Hope. “That’s so that we can balance after the sale. Also, I need a letter of credit saying how much you will bid up to. The amount of credit is for the total bid, not just one parcel. You need verification from a bank saying you are good for the dollar amount you are saying.”
It is very important for anyone interested in bidding to send the check and letter of credit from a bank to Hope Herrington, or that person will not be able to participate.
“I have to go in and say that you’re approved and that I have your method of payment and letter of credit and put in how much you’re bidding up to,” stated Hope. “When you’re bidding, you cannot go over that amount. It has to match the amount on the letter of credit. We ask for the letter of credit to make sure that people have a way to pay for the stuff they are bidding on when it’s all over.”
Conducting the auction online will be very beneficial for the citizens in the county. The site is designed to not allow anyone to go over limit while bidding, and it can allow more people to participate in the sale.
“It’ll give a lot more people a chance to bid,” said Hope. “All the people who work and can’t take off to be there in person have the same opportunity now as others do. They can pre-bid on August 29 and don’t have to look at it again until the sale is over.”
There is still time to register and participate. There are also training webinars available to sign up for on the website.
All of the checks and letters of credit from banks can be mailed to the following address:
