The city of Quitman will hold a special election to renew a contract granting Mississippi Power non-exclusive franchise rights to provide power to the city. The state law requires a 25 year contract with the provider.
Mississippi Power pays the city 3% of the electrical use in the city limits, which is approximately $160,000. MP pays the city for use of street right-of-ways and the ability to maintain their equipment.
“The city’s contract expires this year and the public will have to yes or no for us to proceed,” said Mayor Eddie Fulton. If citizens vote this down, our taxes will need to go up by 12 mils to cover this loss of revenue. None of us want that. Mississippi Power would like to place electrical charging stations in a high traffic area and this is one benefit of a contract with them.”
