The Quitman Panthers win Friday night 28 to 15 over the Lawrence County Cougars in order to advance to the 2nd round of MSHAA 4A Playoffs. With the advance, the Panthers will face region 7 Poplarville High School Hornets.
Two years ago the Panthers faced the Hornets in playoff action. They should be familiar with their offense, the double wing T.
Coach Bynum and the Panther coaches are preparing to slow down the quick offense.
Game captains for Friday night contest were #5 Taderious Chapman, #4 Saveonne Evans, #25 Dorian Altman and #58 James Kinsey.
The Panthers receive the football and #3 Dontavious Hall brings the ball to the Panther 32 yard line. On 1st down #11 Lewis hands the ball off to #4 Evans for a 6 yard gain. Then #26 Tydrekius Carpenter takes the handoff for a 1st down. On 3rd down #22 Levi Myrick picks up a first down on a good run.
After another series of downs the Cougar defense holds the Panthers to 4 and out. The Cougars take over on downs.
On first down the Cougars are penalized for moving before the snap. #25 Altman has a TFL. On 3rd and 14 yards to gain #4 AJ McLaurin connects with #15 Marcus Atterberry for a 1st down. On the next play #25 Altman sacks the quarterback in the backfield for a 9 yard loss. On 2nd down #4 Mclaurin connects for 24 yards and a 1st down with the football on the 30 yard line.
On first down Mclaurin connects again for 1st and goal from the 9 yard line. #24 Quitten Brown scores with 3:25 left in the 1st quarter. The PAT is good, Lawrence County 7 Quitman 0.
#11 Lewis is hit for a loss of 1 yard after the kickoff and on 2nd down is intercepted near midfield. The Cougars take over and find themselves in a 4th down when they get creative and fake the punt for a pass for 1st down. The quarter ends with the same score Lawrence County 7 Quitman 0.
Soon the Panthers stop the Cougars and take over and the Cougars hold the Panthers to 3 and out and take the football over. On 3rd down and 16 yards to gain #54 Chris Cooley sacks the quarterback and the Panthers take over on the 46 yard line.
#11 Lewis picks up a 1st down then #4 Evans picks up another 1st down. On 4th down and 2 the Panthers go for it and come up short giving the Cougars the ball on downs.
On the next series the Panthers hold the Cougars. The Panthers come out quick. Ater picking up a 1st down Lewis’s pass was deflected to the end zone where #22 Myrick scores. The PAT is no good with 42 seconds left in the half, Lawrence Co 7 Quitman 6. The half ends with the same score.
The Cougars receive the football to open the 2nd half of play and the Panther’s defense made some adjustments at the half and force the Cougars to 3 and out.
After the punt #26 Carpenter picks up 7 yards and #4 Evans picks up a 1st down on a long run. On the next play #11 Lewis connects with #26 Carpenter for a touchdown and #22 Myrick takes the two point conversion in the end zone. The score is now Quitman 14 Lawrence Co 7.
The Cougars take the kickoff and find themselves in a 4th and 1 yard to gain and they convert it. On the next series on 3rd and 11 #2 Brandon Bullock hits #9 Drew Nelson for a 1st down. The next play #24 Brown picks up a 1st down. #24 Brown scores with 2:57 left in the 3rd quarter. The Panthers fake the PAT and score a two point conversion. The score now is Quitman 14 Lawrence Co 15.
After receiving the kick, the Panthers go 3 and out and the 3rd quarter ends with the same score, Lawrence Co 15 Quitman 14.
After the punt the Panthers show some tough defense and hold the Cougar offense to a 3 and out. After the punt #13 Latrell Hatten runs the football back to the Cougars 23 yard line. On fourth and 2 yards to go, Lewis powers through the middle on a quarterback sneak to the 1 yard line setting up 1st and goal from the. Lewis hands the ball to #4 Evans for a touchdown with 7:57 left on the clock in the 4th quarter. The two point conversion is no good, Quitman 20 Lawrence Co 15.
After the kick the Cougars find themselves in a 4th down situation when #18 Dervon Altman comes up big with a TFL giving the ball back to his offense. On the next play #26 Carpenter picks up a 1st down when Lawrence Co. coach calls a time out to try and settle his defense with 4:06 left in the game.
Keshan Johnson has a long run for a good gain. The Panthers on 3rd down and 4 yards to gain draws the Cougars off side picking up the 1st down. A few plays later Lewis puts on some shifty moves and scores. Johnson scores the two point conversion with 1:54 left in the game. The Panthers hold and the game ends with the final score, Quitman 28 Lawrence Co 15.
