State Representative Troy Smith, along with the Clarke County Board of Supervisors worked together to reconnect the Multi-County Agency with the county.
Rep. Smith, along with the Supervisors worked together to propose House Bill 1587 to reinstate the county’s involvement in Multi County Community Service Agency. The bill was recently passed.
“Now we are on board with all the other counties in the state,” stated Rep. Smith. “We can participate in helping our constituents who deserve this benefit.”
Multi County helps low income, elderly and disabled citizens with programs such as Meals on Wheels, Weatherization programs for low energy effectiveness for the homes. The county can now legally pick up the food boxes to bring back to the residents.
In 2017, the legality of contributing to the nonprofit organization was questioned after Neshoba County Board of Supervisors sought out an opinion in 2015 from the Attorney General’s office about a county’s authority to use equipment and personnel for the nonprofit organization without statutory authorization.
The Attorney General’s opinion was that a county cannot use county employees or equipment to assist a nonprofit corporation without authorization, which is why the local boards recently requested the authority from the legislators.
“The board of supervisors made a promise to the people that we would get this reinstated and we got it done,” added Supervisor Darrick Marshall.
