Mayor of Enterprise
• What year did you become mayor?
I became mayor in 2000. This is it, though. I’m not running anymore. Twenty years is enough.
• What are you responsible for in your position?
Enterprise has a strong board and weak mayor. That’s the code for MS. I can’t hire or fire without board approval. I can recommend. I’m administrator. I take care of all the daily duties. I do the interviews. If anybody calls me, I’m going to do what I can for the town.
• What has changed since you’ve taken office?
We’ve sold the Industrial Park to different companies. We’ve done all the roads. We’ve fixed sidewalks and fixed and changed the lighting in the town. We’ve built a senior citizen building, put the playground equipment in the park, and have had several new businesses move in. We now have a clinic and a drugstore.
• What is the hardest part of your job?
You just have to communicate with people. I’ve never had a lot of problems. I enjoy what I do because I love this town.
• What are your future plans for the town?
Right now we’re waiting on the Industrial Park with Cooperate Energy. It’ll make about ten new jobs and will be good for the school and the town. There are a few roads and sidewalks we’d like to redo. Other than that, it’s what the people want.
• What do you love the most about the town?
This is a great place to raise a family. The crime here is low. Everybody knows everybody. All the churches are good and preachers are great. The school is fantastic, and people want to move here because of the school. Once you move here, you don’t want to leave. If you can’t be happy in Enterprise, something is wrong with you.
• Will you tell me a little bit about your family?
I married my wife in 1972 and have been married to her for 47 years. I have one son named Dustin Murray. He works at UAB in Birmingham.
