Members of Quitman Woman's Club gathered in the Conference Room of of the Quitman Library for their initial meeting of the new club year. The meeting introduced the program of work, new projects and special activities developed by the Mississippi Federation of Women's Clubs as well as the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
New themes and projects were introduced to leaders and members centering around the theme of "Informing Minds...Inspiring Hearts." Project emphasis will promote the theme, "Express Yourself! Art." Special works will be devoted to the T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability in Starkville.
Club yearbooks carrying out the theme of art decorated the cover of the books. The art work was the product of local students who were art winners in the spring art show of the Woman’s Club. Ann Potuk, Third Vice President, prepared all the Yearbooks which were so beautifully designed.
Two new members were welcomed into membership.
After a brief social period hosted by Linda Buchanan, the program was delivered by Mrs. Connie McMullen of the Mississippi Department of Transportation which focused on conservation and the cost of littering on Mississippi highways. During her presentation she mentioned the possibility of clubs planting wild flowers but her greatest emphasis was on the cost to the state for the careless littering by the public.
Figures stated just for necessary clean up reminded members of the tremendous waste of pubic funds required to keep the state partially clean. She suggested that groups adopt an area and work to keep it clean.
A current concern is the "Rolling Meth Lab" where preparers of drugs produce illicit drugs and throw their waste along the highways to get rid of waste/evidence. Besides the poisonous nature of the material there is a potential that the material can explode. Her group has a large variety of materials available to hopefully teach young people and adults and make a difference with the problem.
Supervisor Mickey Long shared information regarding a possible grant to be used to update the city park located on the corner of Napp Street and Bailey Avenue. Members had a opportunity to view the proposed plans. It will be necessary of the Quitman Woman's Club to remain committed to park upkeep. The grant will be a 75/25 matching grant.
During the business session, minutes were read, announcements made and standing committees reported. The meeting was closed with the repeating of the Collect.
The next meeting will be held at the Quitman Public Library on Thursday, October 6th with June Blair as hostess. The program will be lead by Mr. Dave Thompson on the subject of "Pollinating Flowers, Native Plants and Pitcher Plants."
Members are reminded to bring food for donation to worthy causes.
