The Quitman High School Panthers beat the Newton County Cougars on Friday night. The Panthers seem to have the answer for their 2nd district contest. The Cougars brought their 2 and 5 record into Panther stadium to face the 2 and 5 Panthers looking for their first district win. The Panthers would answer that rather quickly.
The Cougars won the toss and would defer to the 2nd half. #3 Dontavious Hall and #12 Keshan Johnson would stand deep in the Panther territory awaiting the kickoff, the Panthers would start play from scrimmage on the 25 yard line.
On 1st down #12 Keshan Johnson would be at quarterback where he keeps the football for a 8 yard run. On 2nd down #4 Saveonne Evans gains 1 yard and on 3rd down #4 Evans is handed the ball again and picks up a 1st down. On 1st down the Panthers pick up 6 yards. On 2nd down #12 Johnson picks up 7 yards for a 1st down. #12 Johnson drops back and fires a pass to #13 Latrell Hatten for another 1st down. #16 Brijuan Dace is stopped for a 1 yard gain. On 2nd down #4 Evans runs the ball in for the 1st touchdown of the night. #16 Dace’s PAT is good with 7:45 left in the 1st quarter Quitman 7 Newton County 0.
On the kickoff #2 Jaycolby Williams has a good kick and the cougars take possession on their own 32 yard line. The Panthers’ defense stop the Cougars in the backfield. The quarterback is tackled in the backfield and fumbles the football when #18 Dervon Altman scoops it up and scores for the Panther’s second touchdown of the night. #16 Dace’s PAT is no good with 6:49 left in the 1st quarter Quitman 13 Newton County 0.
After #2 Williams kick #28 Chrisshun Burks brings the ball back to midfield. The Cougars start 1st and 10 from the 50 yard line, the Panther defense tightens down and hold the Cougars to a 3 and out. The Panthers start out on their own 22 yard line where on 1st down #11 Jed Lewis picks up a 1st down and then the drive is stalled by a couple of Panther penalties.
After a holding penalty #12 Johnson goes right for a long gain bringing up a 3rd and 5. Johnson is hit in the backfield for a loss of yardage bringing up 4th and 8 yards to gain. #11 Lewis’ pass is incomplete turning the ball over on downs. The Cougars take over only to be held to a 3 and out. Newton County’s punt is not good and is downed on the Panther 45 yard line.
The Panthers take over and on 2nd down #4 Evans break through the line for a touchdown to be brought back on a penalty. #4 is handed the ball again and then scores. The PAT is no good with 6:24 left in the 2nd quarter Quitman 19 Newton County 0.
After the kick the Cougars try to get their offense moving when on 3rd down #16 Dace sacks the quarterback and causes the Cougars to punt. The Panthers take over and the Cougars hold the Panthers to 3 and out and take over and began to move the football. The Panther defense holds them to a 3 and out when the quarter expires and the 1st half ends.
The Newton County Cougars take the kickoff and start the 2nd half of play. The Panther defense stands tall and forces them to a 3 and out. After a series of 3 and outs the Panthers fumble and the Cougars recover and on 3rd down #20 TK Cameron intercepts #12 Alex Hamilton Jr. #11 connects with #14 Javante Charles for a touchdown the PAT is good with 36 seconds left in the 3rd quarter Quitman 26 Newton County 0.
The kick was returned to the Panther 49 yard line. Time expires and the 3rd quarter ends with the same score.
The Cougars find themselves in a 4th down when they score and the PAT is good with 9:53 left in the 4th quarter Quitman 26 Newton County 7. After the kick the Panthers find themselves deep in their own territory when #11 Lewis is downed in his own end zone giving the Cougars a safety with 9:24 left in the 4th quarter.
After the kickoff the Cougars march the ball down the field for another touchdown with 5:19 left in the 4th quarter the score is now Quitman 26 Newton County 16. After the kick the Panthers march the ball down the field where #16 Dace punches the ball in for a touchdown and his PAT is good with 2:00 minutes left in the game Quitman 33 Newton County 16.
After the kick on 4th down #9 Kingston Jordan intercepts the Cougars quarterback and takes the football all the way to the house for a touchdown. The PAT is good and the score is 40 Quitman 16 Newton County. With 38 seconds left the clock would expire making it the final score.
