Dorothy J. Bartee to be Inducted into the 2016 Sports Hall of Fame at Alcorn State University
Dorothy J. Bartee, a native of Shubuta, Mississippi, has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 Sports Hall of Fame at Alcorn State University. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Alcorn State University’s Sports Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who made outstanding contributions to the advancement of University athletics. Following the passage of Title IX in 1972 and during her four year university athletic career from 1975-1979, Ms. Bartee enjoyed a distinguished career in athletics where she excelled in basketball and raised the profile of women in sports.
The athletic career of Ms. Dorothy J. Bartee started at Quitman High School under the leadership of Coach Judy Morgan. Ms. Bartee played basketball and ran track where she received awards at the local, district, and state levels (i.e. Best Offensive and Most Valuable Player in Basketball, All-Conference and All-District in Track and Basketball) as well as set a high school record in the long jump. Her athletic talents as demonstrated in high school did not go unnoticed. In 1975, she was offered and accepted track and later basketball scholarships at Alcorn State University respectively under the leadership of the late Dr. Grant Dungee. Under the leadership of Coach Lonnie Walker and later under the leadership of Coach Shirley Walker, Ms. Bartee’s entrance into Alcorn State University in 1975 coincided with the restart of the women’s basketball program where she served as one of the original members.
Ms. Dorothy J. Bartee, who lettered all four years, was the leading scorer for women’s basketball team where her seasonal average was 20 to 25 points and ten (10) rebounds per game. What is most telling about these stats and facts is that because the number of games varied from year-to-year for the first three years, through her scoring average, she raised the profile of women’s basketball at Alcorn State University and across the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Her record-breaking athletic success at Alcorn is featured in the book, Against Great Odds: The History of Alcorn State University (1994). Ms. Bartee was featured on hand schedules as well as named as Offensive Player of the Year and Miss Basketball in 1979.
Ms. Dorothy J. Bartee, a 1979 graduate of Alcorn State University, says that “being able to continue my athletic prowess at Alcorn State University was a dream-turned-reality for me. Alcorn State University invested in me and the talents that I brought to women’s athletics.” Ms. Bartee is honored and humbled to have her athletic contributions recognized as an inductee into the 2016 Sports Hall of Fame at Alcorn State University.
