The Quitman Panthers lose the second district contest against the Northeast Jones Tigers on Friday night to find their district and playoff hopes in jeopardy. The game was marred by muff punts and kickoff returns as well as a share of penalties at crucial times.
Captains for the contest were #3 Dontavious Hall, #4 Saveonne Evans, #26 Tydrekius Carpenter, #28 Larry Simmons, #12 Keshan Johnson, #17 Jacob Irby, #22 Levi Myrick.
The Tigers received #2 Jaycolby William’s kick and is downed on the 33 yard line to start the game. On 1st down #12 Tyler Landrum drops back for a pass to come up empty. Landrum connects for a touchdown on the 2nd play from scrimmage. The Tiger assault had begun. #3 Malachi Harrison’s PAT was no good with 11:40 left in the 1st quarter Northeast Jones 6 Quitman 0.
The Tigers kick sails out of bounds to give the Panthers the football on the 35 yard line. The Tigers hold the Panthers to a quick 3 and out. After Williams’ punt the Tigers take over the ball on the 33 yard line. With a penalty and some tough defense the Panthers hold the Tigers to a 3 and out.
On the Tigers punt #20 TK Cameron muffs the football and the Tigers recover on the Panther’s 27 yard line. The Tigers gain a few yards and find themselves in a 4th down and 2 yards to go when the Panther’s defense comes up big for a stop and takes the ball over on downs.
On 1st down #4 Evans has a 2 yard gain, then #22 Levi Myrick fights through the middle for a 1st down. On the next series of downs #13 Latrell Hatten picks up 8 yards when the Tiger defense finds some grit and stops the Panthers. After the Panthers punt the Tigers take over at the 31 yard line. The Panthers hold the Tigers on 2nd down when time expires on the 1st quarter with the same score Northeast 6 Quitman 0.
The Tigers punt and pin the Panthers on the 2 yard line when #11 Jed Lewis goes under center for a 7 yard gain. #4 Evans picks up a first down. The Northeast Jones Tigers force the Quitman Panthers to a 3 and out. #2 Williams is pinned deep in Panther territory punting from the goal line.
The Tigers take over at the 50 yard line. On first down #9 Kingston Jordan intercepts #12 Landrum’s pass and the Panthers take over. On 2nd down #14 Javante Charles picks up 9 yards for a Panther 1st down. #22 Myrick is hit in the backfield for a 4 yard loss when on 2nd down #4 Evans picks up 12 yards for another 1st down.
After a bad exchange between the quarterback and center the Panthers find themselves in a 1st and 16 yards to gain situation, the Tigers hold and force the Panthers to punt. After #2 William’s good punt the ball is downed at the 11 yard line. #24 KD Newell breaks through the middle for a 32 yd gain for a 1st down. On third down #18 Dervon Altman sacks Landrum in the backfield forcing them to a 3 and out. The Panthers take over and time expires and ends the half with the score unchanged Northeast Jones 6 Quitman 0.
At the start of the 2nd half #3 Hall returns the ball to the 38 yard line. The Panthers are forced to a 3 and out after #2 William’s punt. The Tigers are also forced to a 3 and out after a muffed punt. #26 Tydrekius Carpenter breaks for a long run for a 1st down and #26 Carpenter breaks another one for a long run for 1st down again.
Finally the Panthers get in a 3rd and 8 yards to gain when the Tigers stop the Panthers on 4th down and take over the ball on the 4 yard line. After several penalties on both teams the Tigers finally pick up a 1st down on the next series of downs the Panthers hold them to a 3 and out. On 4th down the Tigers come up with a fake punt and pick up the 1st down.
The Tigers march the football to the Panthers 22 yard line where they hold them and force a field goal which is good with 8:20 left in the 4th quarter Northeast Jones 9 Quitman 0. The Tigers kick the football short and the Panthers take over where on 1st down #26 Carpenter picks up 5 yards and on 2nd down Carpenter breaks off a long run for another 1st down.
The Tiger defense tightens and force the Panthers in a 4th down situation when #11 Lewis pick up the 1st down. On the very next play Lewis passes to #2 Williams on a crossing route for a touchdown. #16 Dace’s PAT is no good with 3:47 left in the game Northeast Jones 9 Quitman 6. After each team with a few series of downs the game ends with the same score Northeast Jones 9 Quitman 6.
