“Don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t even sweat the big stuff,” advised Glen Miller. “God is going to take care of it, period.”
Glen Miller has experienced many things in his life and knows without a doubt that God will always take care of him. After one experience last year, he really started to think about the most important things in life that people should remember.
“Last year on Memorial Day weekend, I had a heart attack. That really changed my perspective of life,” explained Glen. “God gave me a second chance. I want people to remember me as someone that loved people, but more importantly that God loves them more. Life isn’t about just getting stuff and seeing how much you can make. It’s the relationships you make with people as you go through life.”
He has always been a hard worker and was blessed to be able to begin working at a job he loves when he was just getting out of high school.
“It was my senior year at Clarke Academy, and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time,” recalled Glen. “A guy who was supposed to do a board shift just didn’t show up, and I lucked out. That started the journey in radio. I worked in Quitman and then worked in Laurel at a station for a few years. I came back to Quitman and then went to Ellisville to work their FM station. Then, I went to OKK in ’87 and worked there for a couple of years before going to Z95.”
When he worked at the station in Quitman, he was reminded of just how much of a difference he may have made in the lives of others just through the music he played.
“When I was working Sundays in Quitman when Terry still had the station, Bro. Grady told me that I didn’t know the effect that I was having on people,” said Glen. “He said that even though people may not call that there may be someone driving through who cuts the station on and hears the songs and gets convicted. I stopped complaining about what I wished would happen and decided to just let God take care of it. There’s a song by Greater Vision that talks about getting to heaven and seeing all the faces that were impacted because of you, and it really impacted me.”
While he loved his career in radio, he eventually decided that he needed to make a career change for a little while.
“I had to get out of radio in 1994. The sad thing is that I had to get a real job. Only people in radio and broadcasting would really understand that,” informed Glen. “I lucked up in 1997 and got a job with The Decorator Center—The Paint Store. I had never mixed paint whatsoever. I got paid for playing in paint. There were a lot of days where I ruined some of my clothes, but I worked there for about five years. I worked for The Decorator Center, and then I went to The Paint Store in North Hills from 2006 to 2018.”
Despite having a new job, Glen continued his career with radio for a few more years.
“I still worked part time in radio here in Quitman until Terry Bonner sold the station in 2005,” stated Glen.
In 2018, he decided the time had come to return to the job he loves the most when an opening came available at a radio station in Meridian.
“In 2018, Brad Carter who owns WMER radio came to get some paint,” recalled Glen. “His salesperson came by, and they were looking for an announcer. I called him. I was out of town on vacation and came back and started in October of 2018. I’ve worked my way up to being music director, handling music for the southern gospel station 24/7, and I’m enjoying it. I’ve just come full circle now. I’m retired and still able to work, and it’s been an adventure.”
With his radio career over the years, he has been able to meet multiple people that he may not have been able to meet otherwise.
“One of the biggest things for me was I got to meet some artists that I wouldn’t have gotten to meet otherwise,” declared Glen. “I was able to meet some interesting people, especially in country music. I got to meet Tanya Tucker. The one person I really wish I could’ve met was Charlie Daniels, but I never got to meet Charlie. I went to several of his concerts.”
Glen enjoys each day he has being able to do the job he loves and witnessing to others through the gospel station he works with. He will continue to spend time with his family and spread joy to others through music.
