Keep Mississippi Green by Planting Trees.

Keep Mississippi Green by Planting Trees.

Discover with your smartphone the biodiversity that enriches the landscape.

I was browsing on Facebook when I came across a disturbing post written by someone in the Tampa-St. Pete area which went something like this:

"I am getting out of this town, out of this state. There are too many people. There is too much traffic. There are not any good jobs. Cost of living is too high. Runoff from the farms and over populated city is causing red tide, killing all the fish. Have you ever smelled a whole beach covered with rotting fish? The putrid odor makes you want to puke! I can hardly wait to get out of this hell hole."

These and similar sentiments were being expressed by a life-long resident of Florida. They were frustrated by the consequences of the population explosion which has resulted in staggering numbers of people moving to the sunshine state. And now with record breaking forest fires in Canada, more and more people are migrating south, not to escape the cold winters of the north, but to escape the unbreathable air of summer.

We are lucky to live in Mississippi and should count our blessings. Over population has yet to ruin our state. But its coming and unless we act to do something about it, we could lose many of the great qualities which make Mississippi a little piece of Heaven on earth. In fact, I hesitate to suggest people relocate to Mississippi, as then that will lead to our state becoming over populated and deforested. In fact, already I have noticed the fireflies in Quitman are disappearing given over usage of foggers and more and brighter LED street lights. Seems people are paranoid, afraid of the dark, or just do not appreciate being able to look up and see a star filled sky at night.

One to the things every city and town in our great state should do is pass an ordinance to forbid the cutting down of healthy old growth trees without a permit. Building permits should only be issued when they allow old growth trees to remain, requiring construction around them. Plus every city and town should have policy in effect to foster and encourage the planting of trees, especially on landscapes which have no trees. This is important as trees help to provide shade, cool homes, save energy, and serve as homes for many birds, squirrels, and other small animals.

Keep Mississippi green! Plant trees! And the best kind of trees to plant are pine, Magnolia, and oak (especially Water Oak), and other hardwoods endemic to our state. This mix of flora is natural to much of Mississippi and will insure our state remains green, like the Garden of Eden, for many generations to come.

I challenge everyone to observe and record the flora and fauna on their property and around their homes. Take photographs of the plants and animals around your homes and property, including the trees. Post your pics on inaturalist.org. Get your kids involved in learning about nature. Make doing this a family project. Teachers, inspire your students to become naturalists, to take pride and joy in the green space around them. Over time this will help establish the biodiversity of our communities. Plus you will learn much in the process.

In just a month I have made some 432 observations and recorded 111 species around my home in Quitman (see https://inaturalist.org @drphotinus). How many species can you discover in your own backyard? It is this biodiversity that makes Mississippi like the Garden of Eden. Let's keep it that way!

Beautiful Blue Dasher Dragonfly is one of the beneficial species of insects photographed in my backyard. How many small animals can you discover and record in and around your home or property in Quitman and Clarke County?

The Thunder of Elephants: A Labor of Love

The Thunder of Elephants (From Bayonets to Ballots) A Memoir, by Elre Johnston with his son, Bubby Johnston, is an excellent book about the history and politics of the Republican Party in Mississippi. The Quitman Public Library has a copy which is recommended for all history buffs. You should be able to find it under the Dewey Decimal #976.2+. Bubby donated a copy to QPL at the book signing held 17 April, 2023, which is when and where I met the gentleman.

When I saw the book's crimson cover featuring a bull elephant waving an American flag, I asked Bubby Johnston, "Is it about the University of Alabama?" Please understand, I just stumbled upon Bubby Johnston's book signing at Quitman Public Library where I was doing research related the flora and fauna of eastern Mississippi. I had never met the gentleman nor his charming wife, Janet. It must have been providence or "preordained" as my own Presbyterian father would have said.

After explaining about the book's cover, Bubby said, "It was a labor of love!" Bubby worked to complete The Thunder of the Elephants not to make money, but because he loved his father so much that LOVE motivated him to complete and further father's work. In my opinion that is a most admirable character trait for any son or daughter to emulate!

No sooner than I had sat down at the table to speak with Bubby Johnston about his book, Steve Watkins, the Mayor of Qiitman, and his dedicated and hard working wife, Becky, walked in. They all seemed to know each other, and began chit chatting, each in a separate conversation, man-to-man. woman-to-woman.

Have you ever tried to listen to two conversation at the same time? It is not easy. God gave me two ears but they seem to work on the same bandwidth such that inside my mind everything gets mixed up. So I can't tell you exactly what was said. But boy is Bubby's wife a good story teller. I must make a mental note to video her sometime as she is fascinating to listen to and watch as she talks, her face so full of expression. No doubt that's how she captured Bubby's heart.

I just sat and listened, then was able to ask a question of Bubby. "What one thing would you like people to know about your father, the one BIG, most important thing about your father?"

Bubby replied at length that his father was a public relations expert and then it was concluded that, "He loved people!" I would say that is a pretty BIG thing. So buy Bubby's book, if you want to know more about his father, the history of the Republican Party in Mississippi, and some of the people Erle Johnston loved.

There is probably no greater honor a son can do for his father after his death, than to write a memoir and complete work his father began. I was sure to let Bubby know that was how I felt, and complimented him on his book before the mayor and his wife walked in. Even though it is not about Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide, I will probably read a copy as I am interested in biographies, memoirs, and history. In fact, I did look up Erle Johnston's other books which QPL had on their shelves: I Rolled with Ross! © 1980; Mississippi Defiant Years 1953-1973: An Interpretive Documentary with Personal Experiences © 1990; and Politics Mississippi Style © 1993. I thumbed through them all and looked at the photographs. I was quite impressed by the pictures and that Erle Johnston, being a newspaper man himself, had been able to access them.

Plus I sense some serendipity at play. Things have always happened with me for a reason. Steve Watkins and his wife Becky were meant to walk in and find me talking with Bubby Johnston. All I know for sure is that I love people too, perhaps even more than Erle Johnston did, for I would have never directed a committee that fostered segregation. Of course I am not into politics and find six-legged creatures more interesting than the GOP, though some of its present day members, like Donald Trump, seem to be not too much more highly evolved than cockroaches. But Erle Johnston knew Mississippi politics intimately, which is perhaps why everyone should read his books.

To order your copy of The Thunder of the Elephants by Erle Johnston with Bubby Johnston, Please send $38.00 to:

Boonedocks Publishing, LLC

603 Betty Circle

Quitman, MS 39355

For every copy ordered, $15.00 will be contributed to the Children's Hospital of Mississippi. Thank you for your patronage of this great good cause!

Hey, just so you know, I don't have a horse, or an elephant, in this race. I could not afford to even buy one of Bubby's books as I need to save every cent I can for cataract eye surgery which will run over $20,000.00. Plus my home needs major landscaping and repair. But The Thunder of Elephants is an excellent book because of the honor and tribute given by a son to his father. That is a good character trait all our children need to learn and emulate. "Honor thy parents!"

Perhaps I am being called to do the same for my own parents, I already have that book practically written in long-hand. I just got to get it typed up and in print. :-)

Alert! City posts illegal, fabricated document

Attention! The City of Quitman is sending out fabricated "Official Warning Notices" to prompt inspection of property based upon the false and/or defamatory claim that "We have had numerous complaints about the current conditions of your property..."

This document may be signed by Carlton Green who is the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Official and notarized by Tammy M. Green. Please note, Mr. Carlton Green is NOT married to Tammy M. Green.

In a telephone interview Tammy M. Green said she was not married to Carlton Green, that "There is NO relationship." Tammy M. Green is a Deputy Clerk employed by the City of Quitman who also is a notary public. See https://greatusart.com/illegal_fraudulent_document.jpg

If you receive one of these fabricated "Official Warning Notices" you should immediately contact the City of Quitman and inquire:

1. How many complaints have "we" had?

2. What was the nature of the complaints?

3. When were the complaints received (date and time)?

4. Who made the complaints?

Very likely the City received ZERO complaints. The "Official Warning Notice" being sent is on City Letterhead with the City of Quitman seal, name of the Mayor, Board of Aldermen, and City Clerk and may therefore implement them in any baring of false witness. The fabrication of false legal documents is a form of fraud, illegal, and may be a felony when done by a City employee.

You may want to put a NO TRESPASSING sign on your property. Notify the City that any unauthorized trespass, photographs of your home/property with intent do hurt/harm, or invasion of privacy is NOT permitted. Then contact your attorney if the City continues to harass you.

Everyone who is caused hurt/harm/injury by harassment, especially the elderly, is urged to demand that the City cease and desist their harassment, repeal the unAmerican Code #370 (aka 2012 Property Maintenance Ordinance), and refrain from posting fabricated, fraudulent letters by the U.S. Postal Service.

Contact these City Officials:

Steve Watkins, Mayor of Quitman

Naomi Shepherd, City Clerk

cityclerk@ci.quiyman.ms.us

Phone: (601) 776-3728

Carlton Green, Cell Phone (601) 479-8738

1M+ Crucifix

What do you think about the 1M+ Crucifix?

After over one-million Americans died of Covid, I erected a memorial crucifix in my front yard at 120 Anderson Street in Quitman. Drive by. Take a look. Tell me what you think.

The 1M+ Crucifix was made out of recycled material.

You can leave a post here. All comments are welcome. Thanks.

Stop Covid! Buy QPL A Sanitary Water Cooler

Emergency! After witnessing people suffering while at Quitman Public Library given the water fountain was off limits due to covid, I submitted a proposal to Mayor Steve Watkins to buy a sanitary water cooler. This was done because QPL started letting people use the water fountain which is very risky with covid on the rise.

The mayor told me the same thing QPL told me, "It is not in the budget." Huh? What? This is an emergency. A sanitary stainless steel water cooler made by Frigidaire would only cost about $200.00, including caps, and reusable bottle. Is not saving lives worth $200.00?

Covid kills. No amount of wiping down a water fountain is going to protect against the new varieties of BA covid that is now on the rise in Mississippi. Quitman is not immune to covid. BA covid is extremely contagious and wiping down a water fountain will not stop covid.

In the last week three people people that I have encountered admitted to having recently had covid. I am not going to drink water out of a public access fountain. No one else who has any common sense should drink out of a public access water fountain during the covid pandemic even if they have been fully vaccinated.

Many senior citizens and children visit QPL. Both are at risk of covid infection if they drink out of a public access water fountain. Do you want to kill people because there is no money in the budget to buy a sanitary water cooler.

Certainly QPL and the City of Quitman should realize this is an emergency. People can have a sun stroke if they get dehydrated. People can die if they get covid by drinking from a public access water fountain.

If nothing else, pass the hat. It would only take ten people donating $20.00 to buy a sanitary water cooler. There is no time to delay. This should be done immediately.

I do not care what excuses QPL and/or the City of Quitman gives. Wake up! Think out of the box. Just do it! Get the $200.00 to buy a sanitary water cooler for QPL. Make this a priority.

People's lives are at stake. Covid kills! Already over one-million Americans have been killed by covid. I put a crucifix in my front yard in memory of the one-million plus Americans killed by covid.

Nothing is more important than life itself. Please help. Go by QPL and tell them you want to donate money for a sanitary water cooler to STOP COVID.

Please understand my peers have shuned me hollering "Geek! Nerd! Genius! Outside agitator!" Yet too I see and know and understand God and the teachings of Jesus Christ who would not tolerate the money changers in the temple.

Likewise when I see fools of folly failing to respond and act for human or animal welfare, I do not hesitate to speak my mind , especially when this may save a life, one, two, a few or more.

Buying QPL a water cooler may save a life, one, two, three or more. All who cannot see this are blind. Or perhaps they fail to see the value of life in this heaven on earth and the function faith, hope, and love play in the preservation of that life.

I am a "genius" because I can see solutions in the blink of an eye. "Wizard, geek, nerd, genius," my peers shout out with hostility and bias to shun and shame me. I am not a fool. I know the reason why.

Get QPL a sanitary water cooler so no one will die. There is no reason why not to do this. There is no valid excuse. The BA varieties of covid are too contagious to delay.

Call me whatever you like. A "genius," a "trouble maker," an "outside agitator," whatever. But buy QPL a water cooler so that not one person will die of covid they caught drinking out of the virus infected water fountain at the library.

What I call myself is a good Samaritan. Because when I see a wrong that needs righted, when I see someone hurt or harmed, even a dog or other animal, I do not just walk by. Rather, I try to help. For that I get scorned. I would think a "thank you" would be more appropriate.

What do you think?

Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade. What do you think?

The Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade Friday 24 June 2022. What do you think? Please share your thoughts on this critical issue.

When do you think human life begins? At birth or at conception? What if you discovered that life is life and just continues to continue? What if you discovered that life. including human life, really does evolve, and that conception is just the continuation of life, given sperm and egg are alive. The chain of life goes back until the first life occurred on earth.

What if you discovered the nature of immaculate conception? Would this prove God exists?

These are all issues dealt with in the book Romance in the Holy Land By TERRY LYNCH, Naturalist, Ordained Minister, Photographer, and Genius.

Romance in the Holy Land Romance in the Holy Land is an adventure through the time and space of the Multi Verse to discover the miracle of immaculate conception, the child Jesus Christ, and the maturation of the son of God. Orders are now being taken. Send $19,95 to Terry's Fund via PayPal at: https://www.paypal.com/terrysfund.

Romance in the Holy Land may be serialized in Local Social Media. Stay tuned. You may see The Crucifix at 120 Anderson Street. Just drive by and take a photo. Contact TerryLynch@aol.com for more information. Publication will be made after receive eye surgery to correct for cataract.

Thank you for your interest and supporting this great good cause. TAL
