In this year’s VFW patriotic essay for high school students, they answered the question of “Why is the veteran important?” Here are excerpts of some of those answers from students.
Many people lack knowledge when it comes to veterans and the circumstances they face. Serving in the military requires commitment, sacrifice, and bravery. They have an impact on others daily. They volunteer in food drives and listen and understand what someone is going through. Even after serving, they still put their country and its people before themselves.
Because of their great sacrifice, veterans have a story to tell. Their unique experiences give them a voice that is wise beyond their years. There is much to learn from the veteran. When they tell stories of war, of things seen, of freedom made, of hardships endured, they give the gift of seeing a glimpse of the events that have shaped our country.
The bravery and dedication of veterans are unmatched. Veterans are good citizens who sacrificed everything to defend one’s freedoms. Claudia Pemberton said, “America without her soldiers would be like God without His angels.” Veterans are vital to the survival of the country. Without the veterans who were willing to make these sacrifices, this country would not exist, and it would not be the land of the free. Without the sacrifice of their mental health, time, and physical health, this country would not have the freedom and prosperity it has today.
If America did not have veterans, this country would not be as great as it is. Without all of their sacrifices, America would be in poverty, slavery, live in fear, and many other terrible things. American veterans should always be respected for their great sacrifices to make this country great. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
