Winford Dewayne Buckman, 64, of Enterprise, Mississippi, passed away on July 12, 2026, in Clarke County, Mississippi.
Dewayne was born on May 12, 1962, in Quitman, Mississippi, to Winford “John” Buckman and Annie Kate "Katie" King Buckman. He spent his life in the community he loved, where he was known for his easy smile, quick wit, and love for his family.
For many years, Dewayne served as the editor of the Jasper County News, where he combined his love of storytelling with a passion for the people and communities he covered. He believed every hometown had a story worth telling and took great pride in preserving the accomplishments and everyday moments that made Bay Springs and Jasper County special. Through his work, he built friendships and earned the respect of readers and community members.
Nothing brought Dewayne greater pride than being the father of his two daughters, Ashley Thompson (Jim) and Kelsey Wright (Chris). While he loved his girls deeply, becoming "Pop Pop" was one of life's greatest blessings. His grandchildren, Cora Thompson, Jack Thompson, Lillian Wright, and Silas Wright, were the center of his world.
Dewayne never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Ole Miss Rebels. Saturdays in the fall often found him watching the Rebels play, celebrating victories, and faithfully believing that next season was always going to be the one. When football wasn't on, there was a good chance Jimmy Buffett was. His love for Buffett's music reflected the way he tried to live with laughter, good stories, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
He is survived by his daughters, Ashley (Jim) Thompson and Kelsey (Chris) Wright; his mother, Katie Moore and his stepfather Ben Moore and his stepmother Cecille Buckman; his brother, Richard (Kim) Buckman; and his beloved grandchildren, Cora Thompson, Jack Thompson, Lillian Wright, and Silas Wright.
He was preceded in death by his father, Winford “John” Buckman.
Honorary pallbearers will be his close brother, Richard Buckman; his beloved sons-in-law, Jim Thompson and Chris Wright; and the lights of his life, his cherished grandchildren, Cora Thompson, Jack Thompson, Lillian Wright, and Silas Wright.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Phalti Baptist Church Cemetery, with burial immediately following.
