Winford "John" Buckman, born March 14, 1941, in Paulding, MS, peacefully passed away on May 8, 2025, at the age of 84, at Poplar Springs Nursing Care Center in Meridian, MS.
A country boy at heart, John grew up with a love for the outdoors, spending his youth hunting, fishing, and working under the Mississippi sun. His hands were never idle, whether painting houses, farming cotton and corn, or raising cattle. His early years saw him as a dedicated millwright and sawyer at Sims' Sawmill, a fixture on Tallahala Creek. Later, he ventured into business, establishing his own commercial logging company and even engineering his own equipment—a testament to his industrious spirit. He was known also for his skill in constructing boat docks and homes at Lake Eddins. His partnership with his long-time friend, Travis Phillips, in cruising and buying timber was another chapter in his full life.
John's life was a tapestry of hard work and love. He celebrated 40 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved Cecile in December 2024, a milestone that brought immense joy to his heart. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and love, nurturing a family that became his greatest pride.
Retirement didn’t slow John down; he was always outside, tinkering with gadgets or tractors, and lending a hand in small construction projects around the community. John was known for his kindness, generosity, and a work ethic that saw him rise with the sun each day. An admirer of nature, John found joy in watching wildlife, listening to the birds, and gazing at the stars, often with Cecile by his side.
Family meant everything to him, and he leaves behind his cherished wife, Cecile Buckman, and his children: Dewayne Buckman, Richard Buckman (Kim), Travis Whitaker (Kristie), Steve Whitaker (Candy), and Chandra Bufkin (Robby), as well as a passel of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service to celebrate John's life will be held on Monday, May 12th, at Pachuta Cemetery in Pachuta, MS, at 10:00 a.m.
As we remember John, we're reminded of the old song by Jimmy Dean, "Big John” and its lyrical character—a mighty man, strong and persistent, who sacrificed unselfishly for others. That was our John. Children adored him, and his family loved him dearly. Rest easy, John, Pop, Paw, Paps, Dad. You’ve left a legacy of love and strength that will live on in our hearts forever.
