Donald “Don” Slaven died at his home on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, surrounded by family members and loved ones. He was born on June 9, 1941, in Mt. Hermon, LA where he was a lifelong resident. At an early age, Don learned to hunt and fish and not just for fun but for subsistence. He loved to wade the local creeks for bass and tightline or set limb hooks for catfish on the Bogue Chitto and Tangipahoa Rivers. He would later pass on his knowledge and love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Don graduated from Mt. Hermon High School in 1959.

What a wonderful weekend it has been! The girls and I went to North Carolina to attend the wedding of Emily Gillenwater and Sam Dunbar. Emily is the daughter and Julie and Jeremy Mills, and Coy Gillenwater. She is the granddaughter of Raylene Perry. Julie and I have been best friends since our GA’s days at Enon Baptist Church. We were in each other’s weddings and Emily was actually my miniature bride in my wedding. It is hard to believe she is now a married woman. Congrats to the new couple.

Hello again everyone. How about that little "cold" snap this past Monday morning? Huh? I hope you all bundled up and stayed warm. I burned up a whole lot of firewood. Looks like we are at the point of riding the warm and cold rollercoaster for a few days. Anyways, it is that time of year. Not sure what Christmas Day will bring forth, I just hope it's not too warm.
Well, we are in the final days of school before the Christmas break. Schools will let out early on Friday the 19th. I'm sure the students and teachers alike are excited about the break.

Hello all! Season Greetings from me to you! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in our community and the town of Franklinton. I've been seeing lots of twinkling lights and Christmas decorations. Christmas Day is fast approaching, only 8 more days til Christmas. If you are not ready, you best get yourself in high gear. As you know time waits for no one.
We surely have had some beautiful days and thank the Lord for the rain we needed. As time goes on, it will be cold again. Let's face it, it's wintertime.

Jessica Barber, Director of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association, presents the Most Outstanding Player award to Macario Dade of Ouachita Parish High School after the Lions defeated Ruston High School in last weekend’s Louisiana High School football championships at the Superdome.
Jessica Barber, a 2001 graduate of Franklinton High School, has been named Director of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association. She becomes only the fourth director in the history of the association and the first woman to earn the title.
"I can't deny that being the first woman in this role was intriguing," Barber said. "At first, it felt a little intimidating, but I know my background has prepared me for this."

Douglas Holtz-Eakin probably isn’t sitting at the popular table of today’s Washington Republicans because he worked for President George W. Bush two decades ago.
In 2001-02 he was the chief economist of Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers, and from 2003-05 he was director of the Congressional Budget Office. He also was the chief economic policy adviser for Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, which further excludes him from influence with President Trump’s people.
