Enterprise hosted the Union Yellowjackets last Friday night for hopes of a second Bulldog district win. Playing in front of a packed home crowd, the game kicked off and Union started the first drive. Things looked bright for the Bulldogs as they forced a punt that landed awkwardly in Yellowjacket territory. The Bulldogs first offensive drive was nearly cut short by the Union defense, but a big fourth down conversion by Derryon Gray kept the drive alive. Enterprise settled with a field goal by kicker Trace Roy and were up 3-0 early. Bulldogs started a huge drive that was cut short by a pass that was fumbled at the Union goal line which caused the first turnover of the game. Union’s offense quickly sprung to life as they threw for a huge pass to put the yellowjackets at the fifty yard line. The first quarter ended with a score of 3-0 and Bulldogs with the lead at L.J Davis field.
Union didn’t slow down as they scored half way through the second quarter with a touchdown to make it 7-3. Enterprise, facing their first deficit of the year, answered it with a touchdown by senior Derryon Gray and a successful PAT by junior Trace Roy to make it a 10-7 game. Union didn’t slow down as they make a huge run for the 22 yard line and the drive was capped off by a Union touchdown from the seven yard line. Fighting back, Zee Sims makes a huge run with 2:45 left and the clock ticking away. Trace Roy followed up Sims’ run with a rush of his own that put the Bulldogs inside the 15 yard line. With 47 seconds left, Enterprise attempted a shot at the end zone but is stopped and forced to kick a field goal on fourth down at the Union 15. Attempting to make it a one point game heading into the half, Trace Roy kicked from the 14 yard line, but barely missed it. Enterprise entered the half trailing by a score of 14-10.
With The Pride of Enterprise Marching Band finishing up their halftime show, the second half started with a bang as Trace Roy flipped for the first down. The opening drive for the Bulldogs ended with no success as Blake Wilkins made an impressive punt to the Yellowjacket 12. Union takes full advantage of a missed Bulldog tackle for a huge run, but Parks Burt saved the run with a big hit. Yellowjackets struck again with a run just outside the 15 to end the third quarter. Enterprise continued to struggle coming into the fourth with the score still 14-10, and a silent home crowd.
Union started off with a simple run to the outside, but the running back stopped and passed back across the field for a wide open trick play touchdown. Facing a 21-10 deficit, Blake Wilkins made the first catch of the game for a huge gain inside the 25 yard line. With an electric home crowd that could be heard in Jackson, Parks Burt runs one in for six and Trace Roy made the PAT. Union is forced to punt and Enterprise started at the 34 yard line. With 2:33 left in the game and things looking bleak, Enterprise forced a punt which lands right in the hands of Derryon Gray at the 20 yard line. Gray ran up the middle surrounded by half the Union defense and ran to the far outside with only one man in front of him which Bulldog blockers swarm to guarantee Gray’s safety. With nothing but green grass in front of him and a crowd loud enough to rival college stadiums, Gray rushed for a 70 yard punt return to take back the lead at 2:14 left in the game. As the crowd and sideline finally managed to control their excitement, the Bulldogs burned a timeout for the right hash as they attempted a two point conversion. Zee Sims ran to the outside for the two points and it was good making it a 25-21 game, forcing Union to make a touchdown to win. Trace Roy kicked off, and the Yellowjackets started off at their own 16 yard line. Union’s hopes of winning seem to slowly disappear as the Yellowjackets were faced with a 4th and 9, but a controversial pass interference flag maked a first down with 1:21 left in the game. Faced with a fourth and five, Union threw for a wide open pass at mid field and was dropped by a Yellow Jacket receiver. The Bulldogs set up a kneeling formation at the 35 to end the game and the crowd went wild. The fourth quarter was defined by an improbable comeback and an electric crowd at L.J. Davis field. This will be one comeback win to talk about for a while.
