Friday night, September 3rd, the Quitman Panthers were visited by the Heidelberg Oilers for the first game of the Panthers’ season after last week’s game was forfeited by Wayne County due to Covid-19.
In the first quarter of the game, the Oilers won the coin toss and kicked off the game. The wide receiver for the Panthers, #4 William Jackson, caught the ball and ran it to the Oilers’ 45 yard line. With control of the ball, the Panthers drilled the ball to the Oilers’ 29 yard line.
The Oilers then attempted to gain ground on the Panthers but failed when the Oilers fumbled the ball. The fumbled ball was quickly recovered by the Panthers’ wide receiver, #9 Carlos Morgan. As Morgan recovered the ball, he also earned the Panthers a first down on the Panthers’ 38 yard line.
The Panthers’ sophomore quarterback, # 2 Jias Davis, ran the ball back down the Oilers’ 17 yard line. The Panthers’ junior quarterback, #8 J’lon McCoy, scored the first touchdown for the Panthers. #2 Jias Davis kicked the ball for a successful point after touchdown. The score was then Panthers 7- Oilers 0.
In the next play, The Oilers ran the ball to the Panthers’ 20 yard line where defensive end, #30 Jawaun Keyes, stopped the Oilers in their tracks. Keyes’ actions were in vain as the Oilers quickly gained a touchdown against the Panthers. The Oilers attempt at a two point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the Oilers trailing behind by one point. The score was then Panthers 7- Oilers 6.
The Oilers kicked the ball down the field where running back, #21 Markerius Harrison, caught the ball and proceeded to run the ball to the Oilers’ 33 yard line.
In the second quarter of the game, The Oilers pushed back the Panthers to the Panthers’ 44 yard line. The freshman quarterback, #16 Jaliel Cameron, pushed the Oilers back to their 28 yardline. #8 J’lon McCoy scored another touchdown for the Panthers. The Panthers attempted a two point conversion that failed. The score was then Panthers 13 - Oilers 6.
The Oilers pushed the Panthers back with each play until the Panthers were pinned on the Panthers’ 26 yard line. The Oilers then scored a touchdown against the Panthers and delivered a successful two point conversion. The halftime score was Panthers 13 - Oilers 14.
In the third quarter, the Panthers kicked the ball to the Oilers’ 40 yardline. Defensive back, #3 Crishawn McMickle, pushed the ball to the Oilers 38 yard line. The running back, #5 Akylin Dear, rushed the ball to the Oilers’ 21 yardline; Quarterback #8, J’lon McCoy, ran the ball to the Oilers’ 2 yard line. That’s when Jias Davis scored the night’s most memorable touchdown by leaping over the Oilers into the endzone. The Panthers attempted a point after touchdown, which sadly failed. The score was then Panthers 19 - Oilers 14.
In the final quarter of the game, Dear pushed the ball into the Oilers 42 yard line. #2 Jias Davis followed behind Dear as he pushed the ball to the Oilers 28 yard line. Dear was tagged in by Davis as Davis said to Dear, “Do it to ‘em brother!” Freshman year running back, Dear, delivered the final touchdown of the night, leaving the Oilers no chance to recover. After an unsuccessful point after touchdown, the final score of the game was Panthers 25 - Oilers 14.
This Friday, Sept 10, The Panthers will be visiting the Newton County Cougars at 7 p.m.
