Week 14
The Southeastern Conference Football Championship Game will be held Saturday in Atlanta. Everyone knew Alabama would be one of the teams, but Florida’s making the showcase game was somewhat of a surprise. Many thought the Tennessee Vols would be Alabama’s opponent. Tennessee stumbled late in the season, and Florida won the games they had to win make it back to Atlanta.
The take from week 13
Mississippi State’s 55-20 whipping of Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl was never in doubt. MSU ran over and around the Ole Miss defense. MSU quarterback Nick Fitzgerald ran for a school-record 258 yards and two TD’s plus passed for another three scores. Aeris Williams ran for another 191 yards as the Bulldogs gained 457 yards on the ground. A couple of upsets occurred in week 13 as Kentucky and Vanderbilt won over their bitter rivals in Louisville and Tennessee. Hats off to USM for their big upset over La. Tech that makes the Golden Eagles bowl eligible for the second straight year.
Better take notice game
Vandy won over Tennessee for the third time in five years to make them bowl eligible. They will join Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Texas A&M, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia as bowl eligible.
Big Surprise
LSU decided to retain Ed Orgeron as head football coach. This has always been Coach Orgeron’s dream job. He secured the job as the Tigers defeated Texas A&M, 54-39, last Thursday night. He went 5-2 after taking over for Les Miles, who was fired in September. Alabama and Florida have been the only losses since Orgeron took over for Miles after the Auburn loss. The Tigers could be headed to the Sugar Bowl after their impressive win over Texas A&M.
Week 14 Picks
Ho Hum… Alabama 27, Florida 10
The Scribe limped through Rivalry Week going 5-5. The record increased to 99-29 for the year. He is most proud of his Vanderbilt and USM picks.
This will be the final SEC Scribe Column for 2016. Have a great Christmas season and, of course, a prosperous 2017.
