One person was killed May 21 after fleeing and pulling a gun on law enforcement during a traffic stop.
According to Sheriff Todd Kemp, at around 11:00 p.m. Thursday night, officers with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office investigation division were in the southeast part of the county in the Carmichael area working. Officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with an Alabama tag.
“There were three individuals in the vehicle. One individual exited the vehicle with a long gun," explained Kemp. "One deputy pursued that individual into a wooded area. Another officer went down a power line where he confronted the individual. The individual brandished a shotgun at the officer. The officer did return fire. The individual was killed in the gunfire.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate, which is required of any officer shooting.
No officers were injured during the incident.
According to the Sheriff, these events are difficult for law enforcement and not something that they really want to have happen. Sheriff Kemp made it clear that the goal of officers is to protect and serve citizens, and they do not like to cause harm to anyone.
