Parish-wide burn ban remains in effect

With last Sunday’s dangerous fire situation near Lacombe in mind, Washington Parish President Ryan Seal is continuing the local burn ban. “Washington Parish remains under an active burn ban and Red Flag conditions,” Seal said Monday morning. A Sunday wildfire that spread rapidly and forced the closing of Interstate 12 near Lacombe is a stark example of how dangerous fire conditions are right now, Seal noted. “These are extremely dangerous fire conditions, where even the smallest spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving wildfire,” he said.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Silver Leaf Boutique and Gifts

A large crowd was present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday at Silver Leaf Boutique & Gifts at 1105 Main Street just south of the courthouse. Local officials including Franklinton Mayor Darwin Sharp, Parish President Ryan Seal, and Sheriff Jason Smith joined Chamber officers and members and many others for the ribbon-cutting by owner Niki Watson (with sissors) and her husband Robbie and their daughter, Natalie McCain. With the ribbon cutting and the opening of the remodeled and enlarged business, the name is now Silver Leaf Boutique & Gifts.

Red Hats met on Mardi Gras day

The February Red Hat luncheon was celebrated on Mardi Gras day at Mike’s Catfish in Amite. The ladies all came dressed in Mardi Gras attire to add to their festive time together. Since the group did not to meet in January, everyone admitted to being extra happy to see each other. The host, Brenda Penny, did an impressive job decorating using colorful ribbons, beads, and wreaths. Door prizes were awarded to ten lucky winners. The host also served Mardi Gras cake for dessert. “Happy Birthday “ was sung to Dot Cashio.

The Franklinton Demons baseball team participated in the Belle Chasse tournament last week and came away with two wins and one loss moving their overall record to 4-3 overall. The Demons defeated the Shaw Eagles and the Riverdale Rebels and they were downed by St Martins.

Mercer Adese Riche came into this world at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge in November of 1948. She was born the cherished only child of Roy Lawrence Riche and Ada Lea Watkins Riche. Proud grandparents were Mack Henry Watkins and Laura Celine Landry Watkins, on her maternal side, and Louis Jervey (Gervais) Riche and Mercedese Lemonier Riche, on her paternal side. Mercer was the namesake of both her paternal grandmother and her mother whose names were shortened and combined to yield her beautiful name.

When one looks back on the span of a lifetime the days all seem to run together. Short of a birthday, holiday, wedding, or funeral most days begin much the same and end much the same. This is not such a bad thing. Routine can be reassuring and having raised children who now have children most mothers can agree that "no news is good news." In fact, an uneventful day can be a blessing.
