On a cloudy day in Leesville a group of 16 ropers crowded around Matt Sherwood, a two-time world champion of roping. Sherwood spoke to the group, made up of children, men and women from 10 to 70 years old, about the dedication needed to succeed in roping.
“The great thing about roping is you and your horse can do amazing things if you put the time in,” Sherwood said. “That’s the great thing about roping is, man, it’s up to you.”

Growing up in northern Washington Parish in the 70's and 80's, we did not branch out much when it came to fine dining. My mother stuck to those traditional meals of baked chicken or roast, fried chicken or pork chops, and the ever beloved (not really) casserole dishes. This could be anything from wieners and potatoes to tuna and noodles. And every time she put the mystery dish on the table covered in melted cheese, she would announce it was one of our favorites (not really).

The Franklinton Demons baseball team traveled to Belle Chasse to scrimmage the Cardinals in what turned out to be a spectacular game. Another extra twist was that the Demons head coach, Clay Tageant, and the Cardinals head coach, Evan Tageant, are brothers, as well as being the sons of former FHS head coach Jeff Tageant.

*Happy February Everyone! It’s been a long cold week weather-wise to say the least. I pray that all of you are enjoying these milder temperatures even though it’s still winter. Remember it’s already February and springtime is getting nearer.

Winter Greetings!
Over the past week or so we have had some really cold weather with temperatures in the teens at night. Let your water run so you won't have frozen pipes. Thank the Lord that beautiful sunshine came some days and warmed us up a bit. I heard that Mississippi had snow, you can never tell we may even get some snow before it's over.

An amaryllis graces a window.
My mother gave me an amaryllis bulb for Christmas this past year. The plant is flowering beautifully next to my west-facing window. It has several blooms right now, and it looks like there will be more before this year’s show is over.

There have been recent reports of large job cuts across the country. E-commerce and technology giant Amazon, for example, is eliminating 16,000 corporate jobs, partly to reduce its organizational structure — but also because it expects “efficiency gains” as artificial intelligence is used more extensively across the company.
Almost at the same time, United Parcel Service said it will eliminate 30,000 delivery jobs — in part because it is getting less business from Amazon.

Valentine’s Day brings roses to mind, and for us gardeners, that’s a good thing — because this holiday serves as a reminder that it’s time to prune many of the roses we grow here in Louisiana.

Maybe there’s something to this notion that weather extremes are getting greater. We had record breaking high temperatures in December and record breaking low temperatures in January.
January 31 beat the all-time low for that day by one degree. This year’s low was 16 degrees, lower by one degree than January 31, 1966. The high that day this year was 28 degrees, a whopping five degrees lower than the January 31, 1996 high of 33 degrees. And the wind was blowing at 25 knots. Brrr!
